A walk through the mysterious forest…

This morning we have been on a walk through the mysterious forest in our local area. We experienced what it is like to be under the various layers of the trees and identified the emergent layer, the canopy, the understory and the forest floor. We had a great time exploring and listening to the sounds of the forest. It even helped us to up level our writing when we returned!

Deep in the mysterious forest…. (Can you add a line from our list poems?)

#NPATEK Exploring Africa!

Well what an exciting day we have had, everybody looked great in their explorer outfits with back packs at the ready….we learnt that we are going to be exploring the continent of Africa this term.

We looked at lots pictures of Africa and where it was, we thought about things we already know and what we would like to find out!

Then we had an amazing Nioko Bok West African Drums session. This was definitely a favourite part of the day- learning and playing all the different rhythms. Keba was fabulous getting us all involved and we even performed to parents at the end of day!

Finally, the whole year group joined together to share a wonderful time making traditional African masks. These were created using albizia wooden masks from the Ivory Coast. We learnt all about the significance of the shape of the masks and what the different colours meant – can you remember the why the different colours were used?

Simon from the County Council came to talk to us this afternoon about being safe online.

Can you remember any of his top tips for staying safe online?

There is also a workshop for parents tonight 6.00-7.00pm (20th May) to discuss the importance of e-safety.

#NPATEK Exciting Explorers!

This afternoon an emergency assembly was called as a mysterious package had arrived on the field. Paul, our site supervisor, had found a parachute in the trees on the school field, which had a bag attached to it.

As we unpacked the bag we discovered various objects, which suggested it belonged to an explorer! These included a world map, head torch, rock climbing equipment, binoculars, sleeping bags and many more things!

A letter was also enclosed which told us we would be learning about an ‘Enchanted Kingdom’ next term……intriguing….what is this and where will we be exploring? Look out for more details in this weeks key skills!

A quick reminder….

Tomorrow we will be going to the New Walk Museum, just a quick reminder that children should be in school uniform and will need to bring a packed lunch in a labelled disposable bag. We will be leaving school at around 9.15 and returning at 3.15.
Looking forward to a great day out discovering more about dinosaurs from the experts!

Going Places

An exciting day in Year 2 today as we launched our new topic ‘Dinosaurs’. We followed clues and pieced together the skeleton of a dinosaur, built habitats, researched using non fiction books and the internet, made models and looked at fossils with a scientific eye! Lots of excitement and great collaboration across the year group as the children shared knowledge and skills with each other!
